Although I am an English major, I still have ran into many grammatical problems throughout my life of writing papers. Many people still do not believe me because English majors are not supposed to have grammatical problems in their writing, and I’m supposed to be able to correct all of my friend’s papers. These problems did not become evident until my first English class in college.
In my first English class I wrote excellent papers for a freshman, and I received good grades on them, but I had more comma splices than I had paragraphs. What was a comma splice? I was putting two separate sentences together with a comma, but first I had to figure out what the annoying CS’s were all over my paper. I think I have comma splices figured out, but I do wish I learned about them more in high school because comma slices still feel new to me.
Another one of my major errors is apostrophes. I have always had trouble understanding apostrophes mostly I believe because teachers rarely correct this mistake. Like most of my grammar, I rely on Microsoft Word to correct all of my grammar, but I am very disappointed in Word when it comes to apostrophes because it gives me options and forces me to think. The option is usually if the apostrophe should go before or after the S. So, in the future I could take me time and think a little more about where the apostrophe should go.
